SADNESS

Glenavon is saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Hughes, one of its oldest and most committed supporters.

Jim, originally from Derrytrasna in the heart of the Montiaghs, was a lifelong fan. He began to follow the club’s fortunes in the early 1950s and regularly travelled the six or seven miles to Lurgan on the bus with Moody Metcalfe, a schoolfriend who lived in Derrycrow.

Those were the days when the Lurgan Blues regularly won major trophies.

The Hughes’s owned a small holding in Derrytrasna Lane. Jim became a farmer, like his father before him. He could remember the days when crops were planted using a pony and harvesting was back breaking work.

The family later moved to the Dungannon Road, Portadown.

Jim never wavered in his commitment to Glenavon and attended games until he was constrained by increasing age and declining health.

He lived until his 92nd year.

Condolences are extended to sons Alan and Trevor, daughter Sandra, and the wider Hughes connection.

Be Just and Fear Not.
