GLENAVON WOMEN SCORE 8
Glenavon FC 8-1 Ballyclare Comrades
Sunday 4th January
Nelson Centre 10.10am
The first Sunday of the new year saw Glenavon Ladies Futsal take on Ballyclare Comrades Ladies in a return league fixture.
On a very cold and chilly Sunday morning with the snow falling both teams were thankfully Futsal is played indoors, although the temperature inside Nelson Place didnt feel much above 0 degrees.
The game started with the Lurgan Blues somewhat on the back foot with a very physical Ballyclare team keen to make their mark.
Gradually as the half wore on Glenavon brushed off their holiday rustiness and began to dominate the exchanges but without really firing in front of goal.
Jess Rea and Sam Kelly then opened the scoring for the Lurgan Blues halfway through the first half with two well worked goals. Megan Weatherall then added a double, which allowed Glenavon to enter halftime 4-0 to the good with the Ballyclare keeper by far the busiest player.
The second half began much like the first with Ballyclare attempting to impose themselves physically on Glenavon.
Unluckily for a Megan McCabe in the Glenavon goal, Ballyclare scored a rather fortuitous goal from a kick in, the ball deflecting in.
This and some overly physical play from Ballyclare seemed to spark Glenavon back into life with Megan Weatherall finding her scoring boots with a 3 further goals and another from top goalscorer Jess Rea sealing a deserved 8-1 win.
The result sees Glenavon remain top of the table on goal difference with 3 league games left to play.
Coach Craig Morrow said after the match “Again, all credit to the girls today, despite not being at their very best and having to stand up to a physical opposition I thought they weathered the early storm and deserved to win. On another day we could and probably should have scored more but that is nit picking
The festive break obviously had an impact today as did the weather with a couple of players unable to make it but a mention for Beth Chambers who didn’t get a goal her play deserved, also for Alex who had a quiet game but stood up to the physical challenge”
