GLENAVON WOMEN SCORE 14 AGAIN
Glenavon FC Ladies 14 -1 22nd Ladies
Sunday 7th December
Ballysillan Leisure Centre 13.30 KO
Sunday afternoon Glenavon FC Women returned to action to play their final round 1 futsal league match against 22nd Ladies.
With a very depleted squad of only 5 players due to injuries, illness, etc the Lurgan Blues took to a very tight pitch with only 4 players with one player still on route to the venue.
With captain fantastic Megan Weatherall playing in the unfamiliar role of sweeper keeper the Lurgan Blues dug in and took the lead in the match through Alex Winnington. With Jess Rea and Beth Chambers making up for their missing colleague the team got on top in the early exchanges. Following an aberation, 22nd were able to win possession and score an equaliser.
With the team now up to full complement Glenavon took over the game and dominated from then on with Alex Winnington scoring a contender for goal of the season, a superbly hit rocket from inside her own half leaving the 22nd keeper with no chance.
Glenavon lead at half time by 7 goals to 1.
The second half started with Megan and Jess swopping roles, but as the half wore on and getting bored (her words) Jess decided she would carry the ball the length of the pitch in an attempt to score. So with 10 minutes left Alex having scored 5 took over in nets. Megan Weatherall then, after a couple of sighters, scored a well worked goal and our very own Becks showed her own Messi skills to round the keeper and score in an empty net. Not to be out done Beth Chambers scored 2 but more importantly was the bedrock of a great team performance.
Coach Craig Morrow said after the match “what a team performance, the squad were down to the bare bones in terms of numbers for today’s match. At half time I called the girls heroes, on a very tight pitch and with Alex’s thunderbolt to crown it, they were just outstanding. From the cat in nets, right through just unreal”
“We all hope the 22nd player isn’t seriously injured and it was a sad way to the end the match. We have one more match before Christmas which we are looking forward to and then I hope the girls have a great break over the holidays which they richly deserve.”
