CLUB STATEMENT ON MANAGERIAL CHANGE

Following the Executive Board’s decision to part company with Stephen McDonnell and subsequent decision to appoint Paddy McLaughlin as Glenavon’s new manager, chairman Glenn Emerson has issued the following statement:

I want to put on record the Board’s thanks to Stephen McDonnell, Simon Kelly, Mark Rimmington and Aaron McNeill for their hard work over the past fourteen months.

Stephen took charge at a difficult time but made sure that we retained our place in the Premiership and took us to a Bet McLean Cup semi-final. He recruited some talented players and promoted a number of promising teenagers. His level of professionalism, work ethic and attention to detail was second to none. He was extremely well liked, made time for everyone and was a pleasure to work with. It is a matter of regret that it was necessary to make a change. Nevertheless, I am sure that Stephen will bounce back. He will always be welcome at Mourneview Park.

Following Saturday night’s decision, we moved quickly to make an appointment. The Board felt that Paddy McLaughlin was the stand-out candidate. We met him on Sunday afternoon and soon reached agreement on a contract. Paddy is genuinely excited at the prospect of managing Glenavon and is looking forward to working with the current squad.

Although the change of manager has happened within a few days, it is not a short-term move. We view this as a long-term project. The aim is to improve our league position and consistently challenge the top clubs.

I have no doubt our supporters will get fully behind the new manager and the team.

#bejustandfearnot.

Paddy will take charge for Tuesday’s Mid-Ulster Cup semi-final against Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park and Saturday’s attractive Sports Direct Premiership fixture versus Portadown at Shamrock Park.
