On Saturday 13th January 2024 Glenavon faces Carrick Rangers at Taylor’s Avenue. The East Antrim club occupies eighth place in the Sports Direct Premiership table with eight wins and three draws from 24 matches. It lost its last league fixture 2-0 against Crusaders at Seaview.

On 28th October 2023 Glenavon defeated Carrick 3-1 with goals by Peter Campbell (2) and Niall Quinn. It was a victory which started a six-match unbeaten run and lifted the Lurgan side into contention for a top six Premiership finish.

Stephen McDonnell is anticipating a difficult 90 minutes. “Carrick is a strong, physical side,” he said. “We will need to match them all over the pitch and then hope that our individual and collective quality is enough for us to win the game.”

McDonnell is expecting the pitch to be heavy and not conducive to good football. “That is always a factor at this time of year,” he continued. “The surface may not be the way that we would want it to be, but it is the same for both teams. We will still try to pass the ball and be constructive.”

Stephen was pleased with the way in which new recruits Mark Byrne, David Toure, Darren Clarke and James Doona performed against Knockbreda in the Clearer Water Irish Cup. “All four lads acquitted themselves well. Darren and James got on the scoresheet and contributed to our other goals. I am under no illusions that Carrick will be a bigger challenge, but the new boys are all up for the chalenge.”

McDonnell says that, despite the forthcoming BetMcLean League Cup semi-final meeting with Portadown, he and the players will be completely focused on the Carrick fixture. “I plan to select our strongest and freshest team,” he added. “We want to win at Taylor’s Avenue. We will not approach the game with an eye towards the next match.”

Stephen reports that Gavin Hodgins is fit. However, Aaron Prendergast is doubtful with a knee complaint. Sean Ward is also likely to miss out with a back spasm. Mark Haughey, Aaron Rogers, Conor McCloskey continue to recover from more serious injuries.
