GLENTORAN V GLENAVON: A LOOK AHEAD

On Saturday 21st October 2023 Glenavon travels to the Oval to face Glentoran in a Sports Direct Premiership fixture.

The East Belfast Glens roared back into goalscoring form last weekend with a 6-0 victory against Loughgall following three consecutive league defeats. They will be firm favourites to take all three points.

“We know how tough this fixture will be. Glentoran is stacked with quality. They have some of the best players in the country,” said Stephen McDonnell. “But that doesn’t mean that we can’t do well. We will go there with our heads up, in a confident mood.”

McDonnell feels that, in recent weeks, his team has improved match-by-match. “I don’t think there is any doubt about that,” he continued. “Results have not been what we are looking for, but performances have been good. Last Friday night against Cliftonville the players gave everything and did very well. They controlled the first half and were in the match right up until the final whistle.”

The new Glenavon boss reckons that with better finishing his side would have collected points away to Coleraine and at home to the Reds. “Not putting the ball in the net when we were on top is the major disappointment about those displays,” he added. “If we can sort that problem out, we will begin to turn the corner.”

McDonnell reports that Callum Birney (Achilles) is unlikely to be available again until December. Niall Quinn (hamstring) will probably not be fit for the trip to the Oval.

When the clubs met on the opening day of the season Glentoran defeated Glenavon 1-0 at Mourneview Park.
