GLENAVON TO FACE LIMAVADY UNITED IN BETMCLEAN LEAGUE CUP
Glenavon has been drawn against Limavady United in the last sixteen of the BetMcLean League Cup. The tie is scheduled to be played at the Limavady Showgrounds on Tuesday 7th November 2023.
The two clubs have met in knock-out competition on only a few occasions. The most notable was a Bass Irish Cup first round tie at Mourneview Park in January 1982. Glenavon was the 1980-81 runner-up, losing 1-0 to Ballymena United in the final. Limavady United was an under-achieving “B” Division club. Yet the minnows humbled the favourites with a shock 2-1 victory. On a disastrous day for then Glenavon manager Billy Sinclair’s team, Mickey McDonald missed a penalty-kick and left back Brendan McGuckin suffered a broken leg. It was the only occasion in the 1980s when Glenavon lost to junior opposition in the Irish Cup.
