Glentoran 2-0 Glenavon

There was no Friday night delight for Glenavon as they went down 2-0 to Glentoran at the Oval.

It was a game which won’t live long in the memory as chances were few and far between for either side.

Glenavon got away with an early chance when Jay Donnelly managed to get a chance from a quickly taken throw-in. James Singleton, who started the game at left back, came to the rescue with a block on the line after six minutes.

The Glens has enjoyed the majority of the early play and got their reward with 13 minutes on the clock. A cross from the right was turned in by Conor McMenamin from close range, although Glenavon will complain about a possible foul in the build-up on Peter Campbell.

Just before the half hour mark Glenavon could have levelled through Matthew Snoddy when he headed a Singleton cross from six yards out, but he couldn’t direct it goalwards.

However the hosts were to double their lead ten minutes from the break. A great finish by Rory Donnelly went in off the post after being found by former Glenavon favourite Rhys Marshall.

As the second half Seanan Clucas threatened early on with a powerful drive from distance but James Taylor was equal to it.

With 72 minutes gone Robbie McDaid almost capitalised on a slip by Andrew Doyle but his shot from the edge of the box was gathered up by Taylor.

There wasn’t much else to talk about in a second half which played out with the Glens finishing as winners.
