The Glenavon Golf Classic returned on Friday 17th May with Karcher Craigmore on board as the main sponsor.

Lurgan Golf Club once again kindly hosted the event with a shotgun start. Rain threatened to spoil the day but almost on the hour at 2pm at start of play the rain stopped and the sun began to shine. Over fifty golfers made up of sponsors, players, former players, fans plus former Irish League referees taking part.

There was various team prizes up for grabs plus nearest the pin on both nines and longest drive. Nearest the pin on the front nine was won by Eamon McCarron from the Village Inn Golf Society team and on the back nine Glenavon fan Paddy Allen played a magnificent shot to leave his ball just over five foot from the hole to lift the prize. Rory McIlroy would have been delighted with that effort. The longest drive on the 18th was won by one of the youngest players on the course Jack Kerr. The teenager blasted it away down the fairway almost out of sight.

Former Glenavon midfielder Colin Crawford who played for the Lurgan Blues in the early 1990’s entered a team who travelled all the way from Ballyclare to support the event and their efforts paid off when they picked up first prize. Runner’s up was local accountant and Glenavon fan Warren McCleary and his team who support this event every year narrowly missing out on top spot.

Third place went to former Irish League referee Alan Snoddy’s team of referees who finished third. It was a quiet day for them in Lurgan…normally when they were in town they got a bit of abuse and banter from the terraces at Mourneview Park. They were helped by former Glenavon midfielder and handy golfer Alex Denver in their ranks. Lurgan Golf Club member and Glenavon fan Gavin Harbinson entered a team from the club and they finished in fourth spot. Jim Uprichard’s team finished fifth and one of their players is a Portadown fan so you’ll be delighted to hear his prize for the day was a Glenavon Club tie!

Glenavon FC would like to thank those involved in organising, supporting, participating and who contributed to the various sponsorship opportunities. In particular to the Development Group in securing full sponsorship for the event..
