The death this week of the great Gordon Banks will have brought back memories for our more elderly supporters of the two games he played for Leicester City against Glenavon. Those were in the European Cup Winners Cup 1st round in season 1961/62. The first leg was played at Windsor Park where Leicester won 4-1. Jimmy Jones scored with a stunning header past Banks. In the return leg at Filbert Street Leicester City won 3-1. Sammy Wilson scored the Glenavon goal.
For the record the Glenavon team at Windsor Park was: Kinkead, Armstrong, Johnston, Dugan, Anderson, Hughes, Wilson, Johnston, Jones, Campbell, Weatherup. In Leicester it was the same team only Roy Rea replaced Joe Kinkead.
Leicester went out of the competition in the 2nd round losing 3-1 on aggregate to Athletico Madrid.
