Saturday’s trip to Carrick Rangers marks the beginning of this year’s Irish Cup campaign.
Gary Hamilton says his players need to take on a winning mindset in order to ensure Glenavon are in the hat for the sixth round at the end of the game.
“We want to win every competition we enter, whether it’s the Irish Cup, the League or the Mid Ulster Cup,” he said.
“We might not always be in a position to win the league, but the cups represent our best opportunity for success.
“If we get our best squad together and a bit of luck we have a great chance of winning the cups because it’s a case of winning five or six games, and on our day we’ll beat anyone.
“The Irish Cup has been kind to us over the last four years, we’ve won it twice and we have been in semi finals.”
Gary told the website that tomorrow’s game, which is one of only two all-Premiership ties, will be a stern test.
“Taylors Avenue is a difficult venue and we will be playing in difficult conditions on what is a heavy pitch,” he added.
“We need to have the right attitude and come up well in order to win games like this. It might not be one for the football purist but winning games is the main thing.”
Glenavon will have to do it without Josh Daniels, who limped out of Tuesday’s abandoned game against Ards with a hamstring injury, while there are concerns about a number of players are suffering the effects of the bug which is currently going around.
However, in better news, Andy Hall returns to the squad while Stephen Murray, recently signed from Warrenpoint, is available to make his debut.
Gary said that he was frustrated by Tuesday’s rained-off fixture.
“I was disappointed,” he said. “I feel that if there’s 51 minutes of any game and any team is winning then the game should resume at a later date at the same score and with the remainder of the 90 minutes played.
“If a team has lost a player through a red card then that team should resume the restarted game with 10 men.
“And I’m not just saying that because we were winning – I’ve been involved in a number of games which were abandoned as a player as well. If my team is losing 3-0 after 50 minutes then we should play the rest of the game out at a later date and start off 3-0 down.
“We have lost players through injury in a game which I feel never should have happened.
“I do feel it’s something the league should look at. We have to look after the players as they are the most important thing. They’ve had to waste a night and in some cases take time off work in a game which now counts for nothing.”
