Glenavon 1-1 Dungannon Swifts
Mourneview Park was the venue on Saturday afternoon for this Carnegie
Youth League top of the table fixture, the game was played in wet and
windy conditions and both teams struggled at times to get there passing
game going on the slippery surface. Dungannon enjoyed most of the early
pressure and Glenavon were thankful to goalkeeper Garth Buchanan on a
number of occasions as the Swifts took early control but Glenavon fought
back and they where unlucky not to take the lead when centre half David
Smyth had a shot blocked on the line and Dale Malone crashed a thunderbolt
off the Dungannon crossbar. The Swifts ended the half strongly and Peter
Bradley and David Smyth had to be at their best in the heart of the
Glenavon defence to keep the scores level at half time.
The Lurgan Blues were rocked early in the second half when Dungannon
took a controversial lead. David Smyth attempted to clear a high ball and
was pushed in the back. The referee was the only person in the ground who
failed to see it and waved play on, the ball broke to the Dungannon
striker who rifled in an unstoppable shot which Gareth Buchannan could do
nothing about.
This decision rattled the young blues and they could have gone further
behind as Dungannon launched wave after wave of attack. With time running
out Glenavon went for broke and sent on Dale Hamilton to bolster the
attack but it was a goalkeeping error which threw the young blues a
lifeline. The Dungannon goalkeeper had the ball in his hands and rolled it
out to clear but he then proceeded to change his mind and picked the ball
up again which resulted in an indirect free kick being awarded to
Glenavon. The Dungannon defenders were rattled by the keeper's mistake and
failed to pick up Dale Hamilton at the back post and he met Malone’s free
kick to head home the equaliser.
10th November: Glenavon 18’s 3-0 Newry City
Glenavon 18’s travelled to the Marshes on Saturday morning and defeated
Newry City by 3-0 to maintain their challenge at the top of the Carnegie
Youth League.
The young blues made all the early running and took the lead in the 4th
minute from a Dale Malone free kick which squirmed under the Newry
goalkeepers body. Glenavon continued to dominate and doubled their
advantage in the 40th minute. Joe Finlay reacted quickest to a long
through ball and headed home past a hesitant goalkeeper.
The second half saw the young blues at there fluent best and they where
running Newry ragged and one such flowing move resulted in back post tap
in for Chris McGrath to make the final score 3-0.
3rd November: Glenavon 18’s 3-0 Lisburn
Distillery
Glenavon 18’s maintained there impressive start to the season with a
comprehensive 3-0 victory over Lisburn Distillery at the Gordon Playing
Fields on Saturday afternoon. The win cemented the local lads top three
position in the Carnegie Junior League and opened up a nine point gap
between third and forth place. An early goal from Dale Malone paved the
way for this victory, with Andrew King netting a second goal for the blues
near the end of the first half, but it certainly wasn’t one way traffic
with David Smyth having a very impressive game at the heart of the
Glenavon defence as the Whites searched for a way back into the game.
Stuart Bickerstaff rounded off the goal scoring for Glenavon in the second
half for a well deserved 3 points.
27th October: Portadown 1-2
Glenavon
Glenavon came out on top in the Carnegie Youth League fixture against
Portadown at Brownstown Park on Saturday. The game was a typical mid-Ulster
derby fixture with both teams treating the fixture like a cup final.
Glenavon shaded the first half and led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a strike
from Francis McCann. On fire centre forward Jason Gourley sealed the
points for the Lurgan blues midway through the second half with his 9th
goal of the season.
Portadown scored a late consolation goal but it was a case of, too
little too late, for the red half of mid-Ulster.
20th October: Glenavon 2-2 Ballyclare Comrades
Glenavon 18’s had to come from behind twice on Saturday against
Ballyclare Comrades. The Lurgan blues fell behind in the first minute to a
well taken Ballyclare goal but David Smith powered in a thunderous header
to level the scores midway through the half. Glenavon again fell behind
but a point was rescued in the 85th minute when Joe Finlay fired in the
equaliser.
6th October:

Under 18's Game |
Glenavon Under 18's maintained their unbeaten start to
the Carnegie Youth league with a hard fought 1-0 victory over
Ballinamallard United at the Gordon playing fields on Saturday. The young
blues found the back of the United net with only 12 seconds on the clock
when Joe Finlay raced through a static defence to fire past the
goalkeeper. The big crowd braced themselves for an avalanche of goals but
they never materialised. The game developed into a torrid affair with the
physical aspect to the Ballinamallard team evident for all to see.
Glenavon's back four were superbly marshalled by Smith and when United
finally got a sight at goal they found Glenavon keeper Buchannan
unbeatable.
