The Under 14's fought back from 0-3 down to earn a 4-4 draw against Warrenpoint (Saturday 8th Sept)

Mid Ulster Youth League

Glenavon Under 14s play in the Under 15 section of the Mid Ulster Youth League.

10th November: Glenavon 5-2 Newry Celtic

Glenavon under 14s continued their winning run with a 5-2 win over Newry Celtic on Saturday. Playing with a strong wind in their backs Glenavon raced into a 3-0 lead before half time but thinking the game was won they allowed Newry to storm back to 3-2 before another two goals in the last 10 minutes sealed the win for Glenavon.

The first goal came on 8 minutes when a Jamie McGivern corner was flicked on at the front post to Jamie McArdle who finished off at the back post. Number 2 came on 18 minutes when Jamie McGivern beat the offside trap only to see his well struck shot saved by the keeper but Chris Stevenson was on hand to turn the rebound home. Just before half time Glenavon struck again when a well struck shot by Robin Carson took a wicked deflection and then was fumbled by the Celtic keeper into his own net to leave it 3-0 at the break.

The 2nd half started very sluggishly for Glenavon when they came out thinking they had done enough for the points but Celtic had other ideas. They pressured and chased everything pulling two goals back and only for some good defending from Jamie Crozier and Craig Patterson it could have been more. Glenavon then settled again and got back into keeping possession and again getting on top of their opponents to score two goals in the last 10 minutes. The fourth again came from a corner and was scrambled home by Patterson with a late goal by Luke Parry to seal the win. Best of the day was Jamie Crozier, Craig Patterson and Jamie McArdle. Patterson and McArdle both playing in new positions that they are not used to but proving they can do the jobs when asked of them.

29th September: Glenavon 8-0 Sunnyside

Glenavon took on local rivals Sunnyside on Saturday and came away with their first win of the season. After two under par performances Glenavon got of to a great start when Jamie Crozier controlled a good cross from Craig Patterson to fire low into the bottom corner after 12 minutes. They doubled their lead soon after when Jamie McGivern ran onto a good through ball to finish in style chipping the keeper from 20 yards. Glenavon pressed on and were rewarded with a third when McNally rose highest to head in number 3 from a Jamie McGivern corner.

Just before half time Craig Patterson scrambled home a fourth from another Jamie McGivern corner. The 2nd half was only a few minutes old when number 5 came after a good build up down the right, Chris Stevenson finishing with a crisp shot into the corner. Woods added his 2nd of the game to make it 6 and was followed by Chris Stevenson’s 2nd to make it 7. Martin O’Hagan in his first game completed the scoring to make it 8. A good all round performance from the players and hopefully they can maintain this form for the rest of the season.

15th September: Dungannon Swifts 5-0 Glenavon

Glenavon faced a tough away game against what many believe potential league winners when they played Dungannon Swifts on Saturday. From the kick-off Glenavon found themselves having to defend attack after attack from a fast and strong team who liked to play fluent football. Had it not been for a string of unbelievable saves from Aaron O’Hagan the score could easily have been doubled. His heroics kept the score to 0-0 in the 1st half but he was unable to prevent Dungannon taking the lead early in the 2nd half. Dungannon went 2 up after 70 minutes and scored 3 late goals to make it a convincing win. An overall poor performance from many off the players who were outplayed in every department apart from O’Hagan the goalkeeper who was easily the man of the match.

8th September: Glenavon 4-4 Warrenpoint Town

Jamie McGivern 2, Josh Thornbury, Craig Patterson

Glenavon Under 14s kicked of the new season with a 4 all draw with Warrenpoint Town at the Gordon playing fields on Saturday morning. Playing their first game together since forming it was always going to be a tough game and it showed coming from 3 nil down at half time to snatch a draw. Warrenpoint started well in the opening stages pinning the young blues back but after a very nervous start Glenavon started to get into the game creating a few chances themselves.

It wasn’t until the 20th minute that a defensive error allowed Warrenpoint to take the lead when a mix up between Carson and the keeper allowed the opposition to score into an empty net. Glenavon where then 2 down eight minutes later when they failed to clear a corner allowing the Warrenpoint player to shoot through a crowded goalmouth and into the net. Then just before half time number 3 came when a cross into the box caused confusion and landed to a forward to score at the back post.

At half time a few changes were made with Chris Stevenson moving into centre midfield and Josh Thornbury moving up front, this seemed to give Glenavon a lift and they got back into the game when Jamie McGivern lobbed the keeper after a good through ball from Stevenson. A few minutes later it was 3-2 when a Warrenpoint defender fouled Thornbury in the box and McGivern scored from the spot kick. Glenavon pushed for an equaliser but they were hit on the break when Warrenpoint went 4-2 up. Again Glenavon pushed forward and they were rewarded with a third when Stevenson again played in Craig Patterson who ran from the half way line to finish with a fine shot into the bottom corner. Pushing for the equaliser, Glenavon were at times left exposed to a counter attack, but for some fine goalkeeping O’Hagan and some brilliant defending from Jamie McArdle the game could have been dead and buried.

Glenavon did get the equaliser when Thornbury ran onto a long ball and beat the keeper with a low shot. McGivern could have stolen the points in the last minute when his lob was well saved by the keeper. All in all a great result after coming from 3 goals down with good performances from Stevenson, Thornbury and Patterson but man of the match had to be McArdle for some great defending.
