SEPTEMBER 2004
24th September: TK
TRIMS SQUAD
Glenavon Manager Tommy Kincaid has made available the following
players to other clubs: Miguel Chines and Stephen Hawe.
Kincaid said, "Unfortunately the manager has to work to a budget
and sometimes take hard decisions. I have looked at the panel of players
I have available and am in the process of trimming it for the First
Division Championship. Both players have worked hard and will do a job
in any team. I want to thank them for their contribution and will
facilitate any club with an interest in them."
21st September: Friendly results
On Tuesday night Glenavon defeated Kesh 3-0 in a friendly fixture
with goals from Aiden McVeigh, an own goal, and Gerard McMahon with his
first goal since he sustained a serious broken leg against Glentoran in
December 2002.
Welcome
back Gerdie!
Glenavon were also victorious in a friendly tonight (Thursday),
defeating McQuiston Rec. 2-1, with McVeigh and Murray on the scoresheet.

'UNEXPECTED
BONUS'
Quite a few fans demonstrated their support for the the club by using
the '£7 gate' at last Saturday's Daily Mirror Trophy game against
Ballinamallard United.
This initiative was first mooted by supporters and was taken up
personally by chairman Roy Ferguson. Basically fans have the opportunity
to continue to pay £7 admission, which they would have paid had
Glenavon remained in the Premier League, as opposed to the corresponding
First Division charges. The additional finance raised is an unexpected
bonus for the club's accounts and supporters receive a free programme.
The '£7 gate' is located at turnstiles reserved for Home supporters
at the Crescent Stand entrance to the stadium.
Roy Ferguson said, "I really appreciate this gesture by
supporters and hope to see it continue. While I don't wish to put
pressure on anyone, every penny goes to help Glenavon FC."
13th September: DUNS GAME POSTPONED
From Irishfa.com: The 4th UEFA Regions Cup
will take place in Slovenia in September. The Cup, set up for amateurs
only, is designed to keep non-professional, keen players active within
the realms of football.
The Northern Ireland Junior International squad will play the
following fixtures:
Malta v Northern Ireland - Monday 20th September 2004. Sezana,
England v Northern Ireland - Wednesday 22nd September 2004, Dekani.
Northern Ireland v Slovenia - Friday 24th September 2004, Sezana
As a result of Dundela having a number of players involved, including
manager Mervyn Bell, Glenavon's First Division opener scheduled for 25
September has been postponed.
11th September: McVEIGH
HAT TRICK SEALS WIN OVER HANOVER
Glenavon secured a 5-0 away victory over Portadown side, Hanover,
managed by former Glenavon player, Alan Gracey, thanks to first half
goals by Gareth Walsh and Johnny Topley and a second half hat trick by
Aiden McVeigh. Match

Tommy Kincaid said after the match, "I was pleased with
our display today. Maybe we should have taken more of the chances we
created but a win is a win. Hanover worked hard and we certainly didn't
take them for granted.
"I have a number of injury worries. Mark Savage had to come off
today with suspected medial damage to his knee and Stephen Hyndes has a
niggling injury to his foot.
"Our pre and early season preparation is going to plan. No
matter what happens we will remain focused on what we have to do, match
by match."

8th September 2004: TOMMY LOWRY
Everyone associated with Glenavon Football Club has been saddened to
learn of the passing of former player Tommy Lowry. Tommy, who still
lived in Lurgan near Mourneview Park, was a formidable centre half and
won his first major trophy with Ballymena Utd as the Sky Blues defeated
Linfield in the 1958 Cup Final. Tommy and Ballymena made the Final again
the following year when, ironically, they were defeated by Glenavon in a
replay. Tommy left the Showgrounds for Falkirk, joining Glenavon on his
return and acting as caretaker manager. Tommy's son, Duncan, became
captain of the successful Glenavon side of the late 1980's before emigrating
to New Zealand.
The condolences of all the officials and supporters of Glenavon FC
are with Tommy's family circle at this sad time.
6th September 2004: BIG
HEARTED FANS!
Big hearted Glenavon fans have requested the club find some means of
allowing them to pay “extra” to see their team in action! They see
the dip into the First Division as a ‘blip’ in the club’s fortunes
and are keen to do all that they can to show their appreciation for the
determination and work of the manager and his squad.
The club’s revenue from gate money is reduced this year by the
lower charge for admission to First Division games. Prices have been set
by the Irish Football League at £5 compared to £7 in the Premier
League.
Many generous fans already contribute through the ‘100 Club’,
Shirt Sponsorship, the Glenavon Lottery and their supporters’ clubs,
but supporters have gone on to voice confidence in a return to Premier
status next season and to suggest that they continue to pay premier
division admission charges. After consultation with fans the club has
decided to open a ‘£7 Gate’ to accommodate those fans wishing to do
so. This is an entirely voluntary action and the regular ‘£5 Gate’
will continue to operate as normal.
Club chairman, Roy Ferguson expressed his admiration and thanks to
the fans for their inventiveness. “Our fans never cease to amaze me. I
have described this as an important season for everyone to ‘stand
together’ and this expression of generosity and support is just what
the manager and the board need to encourage us.”
3rd September 2004: FRIENDLY
WIN
In Friday night's
friendly against Ards, Glenavon came from a goal down to win 2-1, with
superb strikes from Johnny Topley and Paul McKnight. Topley's thunderous
shot finished off a great one-touch move involving McKnight,
Feeney and Withnell. McKnight's goal was a Beckham-like free kick from
inside the 'D' into the top corner. All the goals came in the second
half with Ards sub Robertson finishing with a neat back heel after a
quick break by Rainey stretched the Glenavon defence. In the first half
Gareth Walsh failed to find the net with any of a handful of good
opportunities, twice hitting the keeper when through one-on-one and
putting a back post header just wide. Ards created a number of chances
but Andy McDonald made some excellent saves to deny them.
Conor Devine made a welcome return and was always looking to get on
the ball and make good use of it in the midfield. Gerard McMahon did
well when he came on for the final 15 minutes, almost scoring when he
put an effort into the side netting from a difficult angle.
Glenavon starting line-up: McDonald, Clifford, Hyndes, Devine,
Hawe, Murray, Walsh, Topley, Feeney, Batey, McKnight. Subs used:
Withnell, McMahon.
2nd September 2004: A
DEVINE RETURN!
Midfielder Conor
Devine has re-signed for Glenavon following a spell with Dungannon
Swifts. The 27 year old first joined Glenavon in August 2000,
making 31 appearances and scoring 2 goals.
