MAY 2007: SCOTLAND CUP SUCCESS FOR U-16 SQUAD

Glenavon under 16's have been crowned Scotland Cup Winners 2007 after a successful trip to the prestigious tournament which is held in Ayr over the bank holiday weekend.

This year was the 30th anniversary of the tournament which in previous years has seen Rangers, Chelsea, and Hearts crowned as champions but never have a local club clinched the title at under 16 level.

A squad of 18 players left Mourneview Park along with coaches Davy Maguire, Alex Denver and Brendan Grimes and the boys coasted through their opening group games with wins against Steinhousmuir (4-0), Dundee (3-0) and Redheugh BC (1-0) scoring eight times in the process and conceding none. This set up a semi-final against Ayr who were pre tournament favourites. A hard fought game finally ended 2-2 and the Glenavon boys held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties. The other semi-final saw Redheugh overcome Cramlington Juniors 6-5 on penalties.

The final, which was played at Dam Park Stadium in Ayr, saw Glenavon raise their game to new levels against Paul Gascoigne's first club and the final score of 2-1 was flattering to the opposition.
