A late winner for the hosts ended Glenavon's 100% away record in the Carnegie
Premier League.

| Neal Gawley is brought down by
Cullen Feeney |
The major talking point of the first half came when Neal Galwey's run was
brought to an end by a challenge from Cullen Feeney. Referee Hugh Carvill
decided the offence was outside the box but strangely only produced a yellow
card despite the fact that Gawley was denied a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Glenavon started the game with Gawley up front in place of
the injured Colm Kearney with Paul Walsh coming in for his first start in seven
games. In the first minute Walsh crossed from the left for Lewis Hamlin but the
striker could only direct his header wide from 10 yards out. After that there
wasn’t much goalmouth action until Newry’s Steven Ferguson fired a speculative
30 yard effort into the gloves of Tuda Murphy in the 22nd minute and
a minute later Richard Clarke had a shot blocked by Gavin McDonnell with Steven
Garret firing the rebound over the bar.
Eamon Murray tested Robinson with a 22 yard shot in the 36th
minute. Neal Gawley then burst through towards the Newry goal as Conor Walsh
broke up an attack in the midfield but was brought down by Feeney. After booking
the Newry defender, Mr Carvill placed the ball right on the edge of the box and
Hamlin took the free kick but it hit the wall and was eventually cleared.
Feeney escaped again in the second half when he
unceremoniously hacked down Murray, a tackle that would normally have seen him
pick up a second yellow card.
Robinson did well to tip Paul Walsh’s 39th
minute shot over for a corner.
In the 53rd minute Conor Walsh’s header from
Okunayia’s free was dropped on his line by Robinson and he was grateful to
McLaughlin for hacking the ball clear.
Gawley broke free again in the 57th minute and
went down in the box under a challenge but the referee waved away penalty claims
but Conor Walsh forced Robinson into a full length save moments later when he
fired in a low drive from distance. Glenavon had another decent penalty shout
denied when the skipper went down under a clumsy challenge as he tried to get
his head to a corner.
The Glenavon skipper finally broke the deadlock in the 66th
minute when Paul Walsh’s free kick was only headed by McLaughlin as far as Walsh
on the edge of the box and he volleyed a great right foot shot just inside
Robinson’s left hand post.

| Conor Walsh scored for
Glenavon against Newry City |
Garrett pulled a great save out of Murphy in the 70th
minute with a close range header that the keeper parried and gathered at the
second attempt.
Newry equalised three minutes later when substitute Sean
Friars tricked his way to the bye line and put over a great cross that left an
unmarked Garrett with a free header into an empty net.
Friars had really made a difference and in the 75th
minute he fired over another great cross that was missed by two Newry attackers
before being scrambled clear.
Conor Walsh missed a great opportunity to restore the
Glenavon lead in the 78th minute when he played a one-two on the edge
of the box with Hamlin but he didn’t get enough of a touch to the return ball,
his shot sliding inches wide of the post. The skipper had to limp off moments
later with a twisted knee.
Sean Friars grabbed all three points in the 89th minute
with a close range header, despite a valiant effort by Murphy to keep it out,
from Ferguson’s cross as the hosts took a quick throw in on the right.
