Glenavon maintained a 100% away record in the Carnegie Premier League with
another superb performance on the road. This time it was Institute on the
receiving end of a powerful attacking display, though once again the Lurgan
Blues looked vulnerable against opposition free kicks.
Institute could have taken the lead as early as the 3rd minute when Steven
Campbell latched onto a back pass and, but for Tuda Murphy stretching to his
full extent to get a glove to the lob, the home side would have been off to the
perfect start. As, it was, Glenavon took the lead only five minutes later when
Lewis Hamlin stepped up to the penalty spot after he himself had been brought
down by Alan Ryan as the Lurgan Blues leading scorer looked to take the ball
round the keeper who was deputising for regular keeper Michael Dougherty, sent
off last week for a similar offence.
Glenavon could have doubled the lead in the 10th minute when Neal Gawley's
header was deflected wide from Douglas’ free kick and skipper Conor Walsh
somehow put the ball over from a yard out as the hosts failed to clear the
resulting corner.
Ryan Campbell then hit the post for 'Stute after Murphy had been forced to
head out an extravagant high back pass from Gavin McDonnell. Gawley then had a
gilt-edged chance to add the second for Glenavon when Adrian Harper’s cross
found him 6 yards out in the centre of the goal but he put a free header wide
with the net at his mercy.
Institute got back into the game on the stroke of half time when on-loan full
back Liam McKenna forced the ball over the line in a goal mouth scramble after
Kee had driven a free kick into the box.
The visitors got the second half off to the ideal start with less than a
minute on the clock as Kearney and Hamlin rose with the keeper to challenge for
Okunayia’s cross as it dropped under the bar, the ball breaking for Kearney to
tap in. The big forward struck again on the hour mark as he slid the ball in at
the back post at the end of a flowing Glenavon move. A free kick in the Glenavon
half dropped to Douglas and he threaded it through to Hamlin. He took the ball
to the bye line and fired over a superb low cross which Kearney slotted in at
the back post.
‘Stute defender Mark Scoltock gave his side renewed hope in the 72nd minute
when he headed in Boyle’s free kick from just outside the left edge of the
Glenavon box. Straight from the restart Gavin McDonnell took the ball on a long
run deep into the opponents half. He picked out Kearney but the striker put the
ball wide with only Ryan to beat but in the end Glenavon ran out comfortable
winners to delight the happy visiting fans, many of whom where in fancy dress.
