Dungannon Swifts went close to taking the lead in only the 3rd minute but
Barry Meehan was in the right place to head Shea Campbell’s shot off the line
after Paul Rice had raced off his line to block his initial effort on the edge
of his area, leaving an open goal. From then on it was all Glenavon.
The
visitors took the lead when Richard Gibson netted a brilliant tenth minute free
kick from the edge of the area after Lewis Hamlin had been tripped by Johnny
Montgomery.

Gibson was forced to come off eight minutes later after he was caught by a
heavy challenge by Montgomery which went unpunished by Referee Colin Burns.
Barely able to limp off the pitch Gibson, who has now scored in his last two
games, was taken off to hospital for X-Rays and was later diagnosed with a
fractured leg.
Gerard McMahon went on an amazing run through the Swifts defence and slipped
the ball to Hamlin who tried a chip from the edge of the box but gave an easy
catch for the keeper.
Eamonn Murray doubled Glenavon’s lead in the 23rd minute after McMahon won
the ball with a strong tackle in the right back area and fed a measured pass to
the youngster just inside the Swifts half. A desperate attempt at a tackle by
Montgomery failed to win the ball, leaving Murray with a clear run on goal and
he finished with a neat lob over the helpless keeper.

Glenavon held the two-goal lead until the half time interval without too many
scares from a Swifts side that was obviously fired up for the game but was
sacrificing skill for effort, some of which was too physical at times, with
Montgomery, in particular, fortunate not to see a second yellow after he pulled
Kearney back as the striker turned him cleverly.

| Substitute Paul Carville had
a superb game after he came on at the start of Second half. |
The second half got off to the ideal start for Glenavon when Paul Carville
curled a fantastic free kick over the wall, his first touch after replacing
McMahon for the start of the half, the skipper suffering a dead leg thanks to a
collision with team-mate Meehan.
Colm Kearney, who had replaced Gibson, made it four when he rose above McMinn
to head Carville’s left-wing cross past Nelson from about 8 yards.

Paul Baron restored a little pride for the home side when he swivelled to
slot Campbell’s cross past Rice from 6 yards after McAllister had done well to
find the former Glenavon striker on the right wing. Kearney had a great chance
to make it five with eight minutes to go but he volleyed over when he had time
and space to place a shot past Nelson.
Swifts' Ryan McCluskey foolishly got himself sent off in the final minute of
stoppage time when he picked up a second yellow for a crude challenge on
Carville.
