Despite Lewis Hamlin's fifth goal of the season cancelling out Austin Friel's
opener for the hosts, Dungannon Swifts eventually ran out worthy winners to put
themselves in with a great chance of making it to next month's CIS Cup Quarter
Final. The winner came 16 minutes from time from former Glenavon defender Adam
McMinn as he looped a header into the net from a superb free kick delivered by
JP Gallagher.
Friel had given Swifts the lead in the 22nd minute when his first time shot from
McAllister's cross found the bottom corner of Murphy's net.
Barry Meehan had a great chance to equalise on the half hour when David Bracken
held up the ball and played it into the full back's run into the box. He
steadied himself and unleashed a well-struck shot that Nelson parried. An
attempted clearance from the rebound almost cannoned into the Swift's net off a
defender's body before Stephen Magennis latched onto the loose ball just outside
the box and forced another good save from Nelson as he struck a curling shot
with the outside of his right boot. Unfortunately Magennis, who had been playing
at right back in a re-jigged defence for injury-hit Glenavon, picked up a knock
in the process and had to be replaced by 16 year old Chris McAdam.
Glenavon had a better start to the second half and Paul Walsh's mazy run set up
a chance for Hamlin but McMinn threw his body in the way to block his shot.
Seconds later, though, Murphy had to dive to his left to turn away Friel's shot.
As the ball was played into the danger area again Meehan's weak clearance only
went as far as Niall McGinn and the young winger was unlucky as his shot crashed
back off the bar.
In the 59th minute a misplaced cross-field pass by Swift's American winger Matt
Walton was picked up by Walsh. He outpaced McConkey in the right back slot and
whipped over a cross that beat Nelson all ends up, leaving Hamlin with the
simple task of slotting the ball into the empty net.
At this stage Glenavon looked likely to go on and score another but McMinn's
goal proved otherwise and this inspired Dungannon to press home their advantage.
McAdam got a vital touch to deny McCabe as he burst onto Walton's pass and
rounded Murphy and the big Glenavon keeper kept out a Shea Campbell penalty
after the ex-Glenavon striker was tripped in the box by Jonny Cowan. McAllister
and Campbell both hit the woodwork for the Swifts with Hamlin putting an effort
wide for Glenavon from Bracken's cross.
