As Glenavon exited the CIS Cup at a cold, empty Windsor Park the Lurgan Blues
will feel they must do better ahead of Saturday’s game with Larne.
Second half goals from Linfield's Jim Ervin and Timmy Adamson snuffed out any
slim chance of Glenavon qualifying for a Quarter Final CIS Cup place. In the end
the result was immaterial anyway, with Dungannon Swifts victory over Ballymena
United in this evening's other Group A game ensuring they progressed as Group
runners up.
Glenavon started without Neal Gawley and Lewis Hamiln, while Tuda Murphy was
still missing due to a knee injury.

Jamie Mulgrew had the first chance of the game when he saw his shot come back
off the inside of the post, beating Rice and almost going in off the inside of
the far post.
Eamon Murray might feel he should have done better with Glenavon’s first
decent chance of the game when he beat the offside trap but couldn’t beat Alan
Mannus with his low-driven effort. At the other end Thomas Stewart could have
put Linfield in front when he shot straight at Rice. The Glenavon 'keeper spilt
the effort with the loose ball being cleared for a corner. From that set piece
Adrian Harper was forced into clearing off the line from Kris Lindsay’s header.

Glenavon hadn’t played too badly until the break, and might feel that on the
balance of play that they edged the first half but that lasted until only 60
seconds after the restart when Jim Ervin put Linfield in front with a back post
header.

Glenavon |
Michael Keogh should have equalised for Glenavon but he wasted a glorious
chance, almost identical to that of Murray’s earlier.
Linfield completed the scoring on 87 minutes with a deflected shot by
substitute Timmy Adamson which wrong-footed Rice. |
