Despite being depleted by injuries, flu and suspensions, Glenavon led twice in
this match but couldn't hold on to take even a point home to Lurgan. Colin
Malone gave a start to 16 year old Michael McKerr at right back with Conor
McAnallen having to play out of position at centre back in the continued absence
through injury of Marty Hunter, both young defenders acquitting themselves well.

| Stephen Magennis celebrates
scoring the opener from the spot. |
Glenavon took the lead with a 17th minute Stephen Magennis penalty after Gerard
McMahon was hacked down by left back Neil Harkin. The penalty arose rather
fortuitously as Ross Black slipped as he took a free kick just outside the 'D'
with the ball inadvertently lobbing over the wall. McMahon, who had dummied
taking the free, was alert to the chance and took the ball into his stride with
a neat bit of control, Harkin's ill-timed challenge leaving Mr Ginnett in no
doubts as to the penalty award. Unfortunately the Glenavon
skipper sustained a dead leg when he was felled and was forced off soon
afterwards. His replacement David Ward forced a decent save from Michael Doherty
but the home side enjoyed the bulk of the possession and it was no surprise when
Ryan McCreadie pulled them level two minutes before the interval with a back
post volley from Lowry's right wing cross after good play between Semple and
Friel. Rice then made a good save to deny Friel's injury time shot from 8 yards
and the diminutive striker also went close with a curling free kick just before
the half time whistle.

| Gavin McDonnell scores Glenavon's
second goal. |
Early in the second half Glenavon went ahead again when Gavin McDonnell scored
with a back header from Neal Gawley's long throw, a tactic that had caused the
hosts problems even before the second goal.
Limavady equalised with a second goal from McCreadie in the 64th minute as he
ran onto the ball as it was nodded down just inside the area from a cross from Semple on
the right, smashing it past Rice for his second of the match. Ten minutes later saw the Roe-siders take the lead for
the first time when Philip Lowry finished a quick break that resulted from a
mis-directed kick out by Rice. There was a measure of fortune in the goal as
Black tackled Lowry just outside the box but the ball spun up and dropped kindly
for the 17 year old Limavady schoolboy to volley past Rice and send the Glenavon
faithful on the long journey home with nothing to cheer.
