Glenavon

McCann 10 og, Campbell 29

Both teams went into this third League game looking for a first win, with the visitors in a slightly healthier position thanks to a first point gained last week and Distillery yet to get off the mark. With a strong wind blowing in their faces Glenavon almost took the lead after five minutes when Campbell squared the ball to Verner but he failed to control the ball and the chance was gone. Five minutes later an almost identical cross from Campbell led to the opening goal. Black had won the ball in his own half and slipped it infield to Walsh. His through ball picked out Campbell in the inside left channel and, after exchanging passes with McMahon, the striker  turned Coffey inside out and fired in a low cross that was meant for Verner but was deflected in at the near post by midfielder Ryan McCann.

Philip Matthews could do nothing to keep out Ryan McCann's own goal.

Martin had a great chance to level for the Whites four minutes later when Willis' pass put him clear but McDonald did well to smother the ball at his feet. Willis had the Glenavon keeper worried when his looping header just cleared the bar in the 21st minute and five minutes later Kilmartin saw an 20 yard drive rise over the bar from Martin's deflected cross.

Campbell scored an exquisite 29th minute goal to double Glenavon's lead when Verner laid the ball back to him and he curled a right foot shot into the top right corner from just inside the corner of the 18 yard box. Sixty seconds later Gerard McMahon went close with a 25 yard shot that curled viciously in the air but dipped just over the bar with Matthews looking relieved.

Shea Campbell floats over the second goal

Just before the break Francis Murphy's wind-assisted left wing cross-cum-shot threatened to sneak in under the bar but  McDonald did well to palm it away for a corner.

In first half stoppage time a quick break by the hosts led to a rash challenge in the Glenavon box by Aaron Black on Frances Murphy,  conceding a penalty from which Darren Armour pulled a goal back for the Whites.

Gerard McMahon almost extended Glenavon's lead in the second half when he latched onto a poor clearance from Philip Mathews but the former Blues keeper did well to turn McMahon's 40 yard wind-assisted shot round the post. He made an even better save to deny Kieran O'Connor when he finger tipped his 25 yard screamer onto the post and away for a corner. In between the Whites' were claiming for a penalty when Martin and McAlinden got in a tangle of legs but the referee adjudged the contact to be accidental and in any case it looked to be just outside the box.

Philip Matthews just managed to turn O'Connor's effort onto the post

Five minutes from time McDonald made a great reflex save to prevent an equalising goal when Whites' substitute Damien McLaughlin's cross took a wicked deflection off Johnny Montgomery's shin. In the closing seconds Montgomery saw his free kick deflect up off the wall and drop kindly for Matthews and Campbell had a 14 yard snap shot spilled by the Whites' keeper with no Glenavon player taking a gamble at that late stage.
