Glenavon

2-2

Dungannon Swifts

McMahon 31 pen, O'Connor 76

Adamson 34, Fitzpatrick 59

Glenavon finally broke the chain with a hard fought draw against Dungannon Swifts. Going into the game on the back of seven straight defeats in CIS Cup and League games, the home side went in front through a Gerard McMahon penalty in the 31st minute after Aidan McVeigh had been felled by Darren Murphy's challenge. It resulted from some poor defending by the Swifts that saw Cushley caught fully 35 yards off his line in an attempt to clear the ball, only to have it instantly played up to McVeigh on the edge of the penalty area. As the striker turned and surged into the box Murphy’s ill timed lunge brought him down. McMahon confidently struck his spot kick low to Cushley’s right, giving the former Glenavon keeper no chance.

Gerard McMahon slots home from the penalty spot.

The lead lasted only three minutes though with Dungannon's leading scorer Timmy Adamson powering home a close-range header from John Paul Gallagher's in-swinging corner for his seventh goal of the season.

McMahon, Conor Walsh and Paul Evans had all had first half shots well saved by Cushley with Ward and Adamson wasting good opportunities for the visitors. The Swifts had a claim for a penalty waved away by the referee in the 13th minute after David Scullion caught Aaron Black in possession. The former Glenavon striker raced into the box and went down under pressure from David McAlinden.

Darren Murphy (23) makes sure Conor Walsh isn't going anywhere!

Marty Verner limped off early in the second half with what looked like a hamstring injury after he went down clutching the back of his left leg after playing the ball out to Garth Walsh. Seconds later a Glenavon corner on the right caused chaos in the Swifts’ defence and, as the ball bounced around in a crowd of players at the back post, it broke to McVeigh and he was unlucky not to score when his shot from a couple of yards out was blocked on the line by McMinn. Swifts' skipper Gary Fitzpatrick ghosted in unmarked at the back post to head McAree's free kick into the top corner and give his side the lead rather against the run of play. Two minutes later Adamson missed a glorious chance to extend that lead when he failed to hit an open goal after Andy McDonald had spilled Scullion’s low cross, the ball landing at Adamson’s feet on the corner of the six yard area.

Shea Campbell put over a number of decent crosses after replacing the injured Marty Verner early in the second half.

Neil Gawley replaced Garth Walsh just after the hour and he brought some much needed pace down the Glenavon right. Scullion, though, opened up the Glenavon defence with a surging run into the box. With the ball only partially cleared McDonald had to make an excellent double save to deny Ward’s overhead kick and Adamson’s follow up shot. Gawley then went close at the other end when he cut in from the right wing and unleashed a good left foot drive across goal that finished just a couple of yards wide.

Gawley was involved in the build-up to Glenavon’s equaliser when he received Montgomery’s throw in and played it back for him to cross into the Swift’s box where Kieran O'Connor popped up unmarked to deftly direct a header into the bottom corner past Cushley’s right hand.

Evans felt his hamstring go minutes from the end and was replaced by Scott Walker. Deep into injury time McDonald made a great save as a deflected effort from Darren Murphy's free kick threatened to sneak in at the near post to ensure Glenavon went away with their first point in eight attempts.
