1-1
Glenavon
Magennis 80
McVeigh 6
Glenavon suffered an early blow as Kieran O'Connor limped off after
only five minutes holding his hamstring to be replaced by Garth Walsh.
Sixty seconds later and the visitors were in front, thanks to a well taken Aidan McVeigh goal, the
highlight of a fairly dour first half. McMahon's through ball found its way to
Gawley and his headed flick ran into the path of McVeigh who made space
for himself and cracked the ball past Nelson from 14 yards.
McVeigh cracks in Glenavon's goal
On 34 minutes Marty Verner's good touch fashioned a half chance for
himself but his shot with the outside of the left boot was saved easily
by Nelson. Just before half time Glenavon worked a neat free kick move
with Verner again having a half chance that broke for McAlinden but he
could only fire across the goal and out for a goal kick
Conor Walsh battled hard in midfield
Limavady were much improved in the second half, but Verner spurned a
great chance to double Glenavon's lead in the 67th minute. Garth Walsh
picked him out with a great through ball but his final touch was a
little too strong on the bumpy pitch and it gave Nelson the chance to
get in a block. United's stand-in keeper did well moments later when he
raced off his line and somehow blocked the ball as McVeigh threatened to
get on the end of another excellent ball from Walsh. Gawley should have
done better in the 73rd minute when he could only fire into the side
netting from the edge of the box.
Limavady's pressure eventually brought a well deserved equaliser ten
minutes from time when Mark Magennis struck a superb 25 yard free kick
over the wall and left Glenavon hanging on desperately for the last ten
minutes. It took a couple of great saves by Andy McDonald to ensure the
visitors made the long journey back to Lurgan with a point.
