Glenavon

R Black 65, Hamlin 85

Verner 18, A Black 90

Glenavon started brightly and went on to dominate most of the first half, with the incentive of going into the Christmas programme in fourth place had they won. The visitor's could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when McVeigh hooked the ball on to Campbell but he put his header into the side netting from 8 yards. Inside 60 seconds Dickson fired over a low cross-shot that was missed by everyone with Fulton just arriving too late at the back post. Scot Walker then robbed Ross Black on the edge of his own penalty area and slipped the ball through to McVeigh. Keenan made a great save to keep out McVeigh's shot and Verner's effort from the rebound was blocked by a defender.

Five minutes later McAlinden played a ball down the left wing to McVeigh. He turned his marker and released Verner with a great ball into the box and he finished with an emphatic shot past Keenan to give Glenavon a well-deserved lead. Larne almost struck back a couple of minutes later when McCutcheon showed good skill to control Hamlin's pass and slip the ball through to Dickson but he screwed his shot across the goal from 8 yards.

Marty Verner celebrates scoring the opening goal

McVeigh spurned a great chance to double Glenavon's lead in the 29th minute when he was picked out by a great through ball from McAlinden but the 22 year old blasted his shot high over the bar when well placed inside the Larne area.

Ten minutes into the second half Keenan appeared to handle a through ball before it entered his area with McVeigh attempting to get on the end of it but the referee's assistant waved play on. McVeigh did get on the end of a good ball from McMahon after he displayed some great skill inside his own half but the striker's touch let him down.

Aidan McVeigh set up the opening goal but missed a great chance to get on the score sheet himself

The Larne equaliser came from a shot by Ross Black from all of 30 yards that took a deflection off McAlinden and flew over Carroll's head. At this stage, playing down the slope, Larne had been looking threatening and deserved to draw level. A dangerous cross by Hamlin two minutes later was cleared over his own bar by McAlinden then Verner had a shot easily saved by Keenan after good work by McMahon and Campbell.

In the 73rd minute Glenavon had another shout for a penalty denied when substitute Stephen McAlorum seemed to be brought down by a clumsy challenge from Hamlin. Two minutes later Verner put over a dangerous low cross from the left but Campbell failed to get a touch at the near post.

Larne took the lead five minutes from the end when a Glenavon attack on the left flank broke down and, with several Blues players slipping, Larne subs Wright and Okunaiya combined to switch the play quickly to the other flank where Hamlin was left unmarked in the box and fired an unstoppable shot past the exposed Carroll. Garth Walsh spurned a great chance to grab an equaliser against his old club when he sliced McAlorum's cut back well wide but he made amends in injury time when his cross picked out the head of Aaron Black and his downward header found the net to even the score on the pitch and in the Black household!
