Aiden McVeigh's superb 17th minute strike gave Glenavon a deserved
half time lead in Tuesday night's Belfast Telegraph Intermediate Cup
Semi Final. Clifford's ball was flicked on to to the striker by Walsh
and it landed nicely at his feet. He turned two defenders on the edge of the box before curling a
beauty into the top corner with his left foot. McVeigh had already
spurned a good chance as early as the second minute when he shot weakly
at Burgess after he had been played in by Reid's pass.

Killyleagh's Barry Walsh's header looped over the bar from Rogan's 4th
minute free kick and Glenavon's Garth Walsh as on target with a free kick
in four minutes later that Burgess just about held onto. In the 12th
minute Hyndes' shot was charged down and Gawley crossed the rebound back
in with the Killyleagh defence looking nervous as they scrambled it out
for a corner.
Killyleagh's best effort
of the half came in the 25th minute from midfielder Kevin Savage as he wove his way through
the Glenavon defence on the left and fired a fierce cross-shot that McDonald
saved well, with McAlinden clearing before Mark Holland could pounce.
Seconds later Killyleagh were claiming for a penalty as the ball
appeared to bounce up and strike Gareth Murray's hand but the referee
ignored the appeals.
In the 37th minute John Murray did well on the left and fizzed a ball
across the 6 yard area that Mark Holland just missed getting on the end
of and two minutes later McVeigh had the ball in the net but his effort
was flagged offside as he ran onto Gawley's through ball.
In the second half Glenavon looked to consolidate the lead and Walsh
shot wide when Gawley played him in. Just after the hour mark McDonald
made an absolutely brilliant one-handed save to deny Mark Holland's
powerful strike that was heading for the bottom corner. Within two minutes
McVeigh, who was voted Belfast Telegraph Man of the Match, doubled his
and Glenavon's tally when he headed home Hyndes' left wing cross to
complete a flowing move after McShane had released the skipper with a
well weighted ball inside the full back.
Walsh was unlucky in the 74th minute when he chipped Burgess and the
keeper got the slightest of touches to just divert the ball onto the base of the
post. A minute later John Murray almost got on the end of a ball into
the box with McDonald having to come smartly off his line to clear the
danger. Glenavon looked comfortable with the two goal lead but substitute
Mark Murray went close when he slid a low shot narrowly wide from his
brother Colin's corner.
In the final minute Clifford had a shot blocked and Burgess saved well
when Walsh fired in a low shot from the rebound.
