Glenavon lost this entertaining, all-action Daily Mirror Trophy final at
a packed Dixon Park
to a lively Bangor side who were assisted by some skill, luck and a dodgy
penalty. Glenavon played well too but were let down by the finishing, or
lack of it.
As early as the 6th minute Hyndes had to clear off the line from a
headed attempt from a corner and two minutes later McShane's dipping
shot had to be turned round the post by Brown in the Bangor goal.
Bangor took the lead in the10th minute when an off-target shot from
Marty Verner
cannoned off David McAlinden at the back post and rebounded into the
net. The opportunity had arisen when Pete Batey lost his footing under
possibly illegal pressure from Verner. Bangor doubled the lead in the 25th minute when a
well-worked move left David Officer unmarked just inside the Glenavon
box and, despite a valiant block by McDonald, the ball spun up off him
and looped into the net.
Johnny Topley was forced to come off in the 32nd minute, to be replaced
by Jim McCloskey. Within seconds Conor Devine gave the Blues hope when he got on the end of a good through ball
from McShane and took it round
the Bangor keeper before slotting it into the empty net.
Bangor's two-goal cushion was restored three minutes before the interval
when McDonald was penalised for bringing down Ryan Brown (2), even
though he clearly played the ball. Even the Bangor players seemed
surprised at the referee's decision. McDonald saved Verner's penalty and the
follow up but somehow, despite three Glenavon players trying to clear
it, the ball was bundled over the line by Morrow.
Glenavon enjoyed the majority of the play in the second half, hitting
the woodwork once and having several other efforts well saved or
flashing just wide. In the third minute of the second half Hyndes put in
a great run down the left flank and sent over a teasing centre that a
diving Candlish just got the merest of touches to as he dived headlong.
This was probably enough to put off Walsh who could only stab the ball
straight to the keeper. Batey then sent a high ball into the Bangor box
that Murray nodded down but the alert Brown dropped on the ball in a
flash before any Glenavon player could get to it.
Bangor then enjoyed a short period of pressure as they forced a number
of corners and free kicks. McDonald palmed one free kick away for a
corner from which he had to tip Strain's header over the bar. He then
made a brilliant double save to deny Verner who had broken through.
Hyndes did well down the left again and his cross was deflected off a
defender and, as it looped over the keeper, it looked destined to drop
into the net but it came off the woodwork. The ball actually fell nicely
for Walsh but he sliced his shot across the goals and out for a goal
kick. With 20 minutes remaining Gerard McMahon replaced McAlinden but he
was unable to produce the magic that was needed to pull back the two
goal deficit. McAlorum struck a shot wide and McMahon's 88th minute back
post header from yet another Hyndes cross was also wide.
Verner missed a couple of good opportunities to really finish off the
game, including bursting through the middle with Glenavon pressing
forward in the last minute but McDonald just got enough of a touch to
divert his shot wide of the post.
