A brilliant second half hat trick from in-form striker Aiden McVeigh ensured
Glenavon returned from the Hen Run with all three points. The win took Glenavon into second place in the table,
with Donegal Celtic surprisingly losing 1-3 at home to Coagh United who
come to Mourneview in a fortnight's time.
The first half was a fairly scrappy affair with Gawley unlucky not to
score in the 18th minute when he struck the post after he seized on
Miskelly's weak punch. In the 39th minute McDonald made a great save to
deny Paul Davies as he ran onto his skipper's through ball.
Glenavon really should have taken the lead in stoppage time at the
end of the first half when McVeigh beat the centre half, took Miskelly
out of the equation and squared the ball but somehow Clifford managed to
shoot over the empty net from inside the six yard area.

Derek Delaney set up the second goal for Aiden
McVeigh |
Glenavon were much better in the second half and Delaney should have
done better with a couple of chances that he put into the side netting
after working himself good shooting opportunities when O'Connor twice
picked him out on the inside left channel. Clifford almost got on the score sheet
in the 63rd minute when he put a diving header just wide from Gawley's
cross. A minute later Gawley had the chance when McVeigh played him in
but the youngster was a bit hesitant and allowed Miskelly to get a hand
to the ball.

Aiden McVeigh worked hard throughout the game
and deserved his three goals. |
Gary Clifford,
who missed that golden opportunity in first half injury time, made amends
with a great cross in the 65th minute that McVeigh side footed in at the
back post. Seconds earlier McDonald had saved brilliantly with his legs
to deny Davies an opener for the Duns. Derek Delaney may have squandered
those earlier chances but in the 75th minute he squared the ball to
McVeigh and the 21 year old made no mistake with his left foot shot past
Miskelly. Two minutes later the
win was beyond doubt when he completed his hat trick with the easiest of the three finishes
as he tapped in from close range a great low cross fizzed across the 6 yard
line by Neil Gawley.
