Glenavon

2 - 0

Ballinamallard United

McAlinden 74, Withnell 82

With Glenavon needing just a point from this game to be sure of topping Section A, it was the visitors, still without a win in this competition, who started the brighter. In the 5th minute Paul Smyth tested Andy McDonald with a well-struck shot from just outside the box that the Glenavon keeper was unable to hold and needed his defence to complete the clearance. In the 20th minute Peter Withnell caught the right back in possession but put his shot wide. Two minutes later Devine burst into the box with the ball at his feet and seemed to have taken it around the keeper only to go down over his outstretched arm. Mr Rowntree, the referee, waved away the Glenavon players' penalty appeals, though he did not deem it necessary to produce a yellow card for 'diving'. There certainly appeared to have been contact but perhaps he felt Devine could have stayed on his feet?

Just after the half hour Smyth again threatened for the visitors when he ran onto a great through ball and showed an excellent touch that took him into the box. He struck a low left foot shot and was unlucky to see it rebound off the foot of the post. The ball was only half cleared but the danger was averted when the follow up was blasted over the bar.

Walsh then threatened with a shot that dipped just over the bar and Withnell put a back post header wide after good work on the left by Hyndes and Topley.

At the start of the second half Hyndes surged forward and squared a good ball across the 18 yard line for Feeney but his poor touch allowed it to run through to the keeper. Feeney was replaced by McVeigh just before the hour mark and Wright replaced Walsh, who had taken a knock in the first period. Topley went close direct from an in-swinging corner which Murphy did well to dig out from under his bar at the cost of another corner from which McAlinden's header was cleared off the line.

Centre half Davy McAlinden scored his first Glenavon goal in today's match

Pete Batey replaced Conor Devine and began to boss the midfield. Minutes later Glenavon took the lead when McAlinden scored with a well placed header from Topley's free kick out on the left wing. The former Crusaders defender had to be alert at the other end in the 81st minute when Ballinamallard put together a flowing move that ended a dangerous cross from the right bye line that he cleared to safety. A minute later Withnell made the game safe for Glenavon  when he scored at the second attempt after his first effort had been well saved by Murphy. McVeigh's good hold up play and lay-off to his strike partner had opened up the defence and provided the shooting opportunity from 8 yards out.

In the final minute Withnell could have added a third but he put a header into the side netting from Topley's free kick to the back post.
