Tuesday 15th March 2005, Intermediate League First Division

Carrick Rangers

4 - 2

Glenavon

Culbertson, Hegan, McRea, Dickson

McKnight, Walsh

Despite dominating for the first 30 minutes and taking a well deserved lead in the 17th minute through a diving header from Paul McKnight, Glenavon failed to kill the game off and poor defending at two long free kicks into the box in the 33rd and 38th minutes allowed Ricky Culbertson and Ross Hegan to benefit as they rose to plant free headers past Glenavon's young keeper, Stephen Carroll, in for the suspended Andy McDonald.

From the off Glenavon had looked to be up for the game and Delaney should have done better in the 5th minute when McKnight's cross found him in the box but his weak shot did not trouble Hartley. From his kick-out Reid had to make an important interception to prevent Rangers getting in on goal. O'Connor, who had scored with a great free kick on Friday last, had a similar opportunity in the 8th minute but this time his effort curled wide.

Taggart's 25 yard snap shot brushed the top of the Glenavon bar in the 16th minute but from the goal kick Maxwell tried to direct a header back to his keeper but he did not make sufficient contact and Delaney nipped in. Although his shot was well saved by Hartley, the ball rebounded to him and he crossed for McKnight to head in to an unguarded net.

Glenavon should have heeded the warning signs in the 24th minute when a free kick swung into the box fell to Hegan but he sliced a shot wide from about 12 yards out. On the half hour mark McMahon did well on the left and swung a good cross into the Rangers' area and, as the home side struggled to clear the danger, two shots were blocked before the ball was eventually hacked clear. Delaney brought a good save out of Hartley two minutes later as his low drive was pushed out by the keeper and O'Connor was just beaten to the rebound by the defender.

The home side equalised in the 33rd minute when Culbertson rose in the box to glance a free kick from the half way line into the bottom corner of the net. Glenavon threatened to restore the lead three minutes later as McAlorum got his head to McMahon's cross but he directed his header wide of the far post.

Rangers went in front in the 38th minute as once again the Glenavon defence failed to deal with a long free kick and Hegan was allowed a free header that just sneaked inside the back post.

Garth Walsh drew Glenavon level in the 63rd minute as he rose at the back post to head McKnight's cross past Hartley but veteran striker Crawford McRea restored Rangers' lead five minutes later when he showed a good touch to control a deflected cross and turned and shot low past the helpless Carroll. The young keeper was also blameless when left winger Thomas Dickson volleyed home a deep cross at the back post to wrap up the points for the home side.
